The client is a non-profit that aims to develop small-holder farmers to enable them to build secure livelihoods and contribute to the verall success of the South African economy. Garden Heroes is a project of Afrigrow and works within schools in deprived areas to encourage the use of school property for smallscale farming to feed schools and local communities.

BRIEF

CREATING FARMERS

The client was looking for a solution to the challenge of upskilling learners and members of the broader school community to enable them to grow crops. Faced with barriers of language and literacy, the client was seeking a solution that was engaging, transferable and of sufficient quality to attract sponsors.

CONCEPT

CREATING GARDEN HEROES

CHANGE AGENT COLLECTIVE proposed a comic series based around relatable characters and that could be translated into various languages as required and developed further in line with funding and the needs of the client.

EXECUTION

A BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL COMIC WITH PURPOSE

CHANGE AGENT COLLECTIVE created a stunning piece of comic art, introducing new characters as garden heroes who would serve to inspire local communities. The publication included lessons on planting, maintaining and harvesting crops in a visual language that required minimal literacy. Our illustrators worked with a bold and recognisable style that is well-suited to future development. We arranged printing on FSC certified paper and the comic was broadly distributed among schools in the pilot programme. The publication was also distributed in a digital format.
